Johnny Depp, the popular Hollywood star,in Hollywood mostly known for his part in Pirates of the Carribean.Johnny is well known for his body art.
Johnny has said: “My body is a journal in a way. It’s like what sailors used to do, where every tattoo meant something, a specific time in your life when you make a mark on yourself, whether you do it to yourself with a knife or with a professional tattoo artist.”
Depp has at least fourteen tattoos as of now and each tattoo has a specific reason.
1.Native american head
Johnny has a Cherokee Indian chief head on his right bicep. This is a tribute to his ancestral heritage; his grandmother was Cherokee. It is reported as Johnny’s first tattoo, dated some time in 1980.
The tattoo Winona Forever was dedicated to his girlfriend Winona Ryder. This was then edited to read Wino Forever.
3.Three Small Rectangles
These three little rectangles are found on his right index finger. He once described them as “permanent phone doodles”
4.Heart and Betty Sue
Johnny has “Betty Sue” tattooed inside a heart surrounded by a tribal marking on his left bicep. It is a tribute to his mother. It was done on May 31st, 1988.His mother’s name Sue is written inside a heart. The tattoo was made on May 31, 1988.
On his left upper arm above his “Betty Sue” tattoo, Johnny has an inverted black triangle. Johnny has not said what it means to him but an inverted triangle is generally a symbol of the feminine, of a heart or an expression of romantic love.
6.The Brave Symbol
This is a symbol used and seen in various scenes of the film The Brave, which Johnny directed and starred in. It’s placed on the inside of his right lower arm. Click on the black text to read Johnny’s interpretation of this symbol.
Between the thumb and the index finger of his left hand, Johnny has the number 3. According to Johnny: “Three is a sort of magical number for me. It’s a very creative number. Triangle, trinity, you know, two people make another person. Three is a mystical, magical number.” But on another occasion he was quoted as saying: “It’s just a three, man, a friend just put it there one day while we were bored.”
8.Skull and Crossbones
On the outside of his right lower leg, Johnny has a tattoo of a skull and crossbones with the words “death is certain” under it. There’s a story about this tattoo as told by Jonathan Shaw.
9.Silence Exile Cunning
Johnny Depp first appeared with this tattoo on his arm at the MTV movie awards in 2008. Apparently it is a quote from a book from James Joyce titled “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”.
this tattoo on the inside of Johnny’s left arm appears to be a skeleton key. Johnny has not revealed what this tattoo means to him, but symbolically it represents the unlocking of doors and entering a new phase in life.
The “Z” or the “zigzag” tattoo on the back of Johnny’s left hand .although the true meaning of his tattoo hasn’t been revealed,represents movement upon Mother Earth and closing connections with Father Sky.
12.Swallow and Jack
This is the tattoo seen in the film Pirates of the Caribbean, Curse of the Black Pearl, as a signature of the pirate Captain Jack Sparrow. Johnny had it done after the completion of the film with one difference – the swallow flies towards him. Under it he has the name of his son, Jack. Johnny has stated that he made the change to the direction of the swallow because, “You have to have it flying towards you. He’s gotta always fly back to you.”
